Information Security Imbedded in Culture

Culture......

This word can make or break a company. This is easier to build and adjust when you are a SMB. As you get bigger, it gets more difficult.

Building a strong security culture for your business is becoming less of an option and more of a necessity. Not just for cybersecurity, but any aspect of information security. As Information is gold to many, you need to be aware of a few things:

Identify information is important and sensitive:

There is a lot of information that flows through businesses every day. You must know what information that your business cannot operate without along with information that can cause damage if it gets into the hands of a competitor or bad actor.

Know where your information is who has access:

How do you protect something when you are not certain of where it is or who has access? Think of it like your money. You don't want just anybody to have access to your account and your business and customer information should be treated the same way.

Stay updated on the current threats to your industry:

There are a lot of sites that give you info on the latest threats such as Bleeping Computer, Dark Reading and MSSP Alert. Increasing awareness will better prepare you to counter these threats. Just like in court, ignorance of the law is not an excuse! Situational awareness is the first line of defense!

Have trusted experts to help you on your company's security journey:

It's better to address security issues before an incident (and it's much cheaper!). You can do your own research, but it would be much more efficient if you have someone that has already built information security programs to give you a solid foundation.
